Nearly a week following the devastating hurricane hit western Jamaica with historic intensity, people in damaged neighborhoods in coastal zones are still desperately waiting for assistance.

Multiple routes are obstructed by wreckage and people are isolated with scarce supplies, without electricity or clean water, and uncertainty about recovery timelines.

Rising Death Toll

The government said on Saturday that no fewer than 28 individuals in Jamaica have died since the hurricane hit as a monster category five storm with 185 mph (297km/h) sustained winds.

This marks approximately half again as many in the casualty count recently, and figures may increase as authorities make progress into additional regions in the next few days.
