Watford Part Ways With Paulo Pezzolano Following a 10-Match Stint and Reappoint Former Boss as Manager
The Championship side have made the move to terminate their manager's contract after only a brief period and 10 matches in control, confirming the return of former boss the Spanish coach as his successor.
It is understood that the Uruguayan coach, appointed in May to take over from Tom Cleverley, along with his technical staff, were told not to lead practice on Wednesday as rumors about his exit grew on the previous day.
The 40-year-old was called to a discussion where he was named the 11th manager Watford have let go since the start of the year 2020.
"The club is delighted to reappoint Javi," stated the club's chief executive. "His enthusiasm, guidance and clear strategy will foster stability, togetherness and positive energy.
"We are sure there are many supporters who hoped Javi had stayed on in 2019. With this young and exciting squad, we are convinced his know-how and attributes are precisely what we need now."
Gracia guided Watford to the FA Cup showpiece for the only other occasion in their history in that year, but was dismissed a few matches into the next season and most recently coached at Leeds in last year.
"For me, the emotion I have right now is that I'm going back home. It was the most enjoyable period of my professional life," Gracia stated. "There are fond memories and we have loose ends at Watford. For us, it's another important step in our journey.
"It is something special for us, and simultaneously we are highly motivated for this season. If we are together, we are stronger."
The decision to remove Pezzolano arrives even after their win against Oxford at their home ground on the weekend, which moved them to eleventh place in the Championship after a difficult opening that earned five points from the initial six matches.
Pezzolano is said to have departed dismayed by the decision to sack him, having led the side to a three-match unbeaten run that also included a victory at home over Hull and a draw at Fratton Park, placing them three points off the promotion playoffs.
Pezzolano arrived soon after the conclusion of the previous campaign with a strong record of guiding teams to advancement in La Liga, Brazil and Uruguay.
