A seven-time Grand Slam title holder Venus Williams has secured a wild-card entry for the first Grand Slam of the year, which kicks off on January 18 in Melbourne.

A Landmark Return to Melbourne Park

The event organizers announced on the weekend that the 45-year-old icon will make a return at the tournament venue a staggering 28 years after her first appearance. During 1998, she overcame her younger sister Serena in the second round before bowing out in the last eight to compatriot Lindsay Davenport.

Preparing for the Australian Summer

Venus had previously revealed in November her plans to compete in New Zealand's Auckland Classic, where she also received a special entry, two weeks prior to the Melbourne event. The Australian Open noted that Williams is also entered to play a tournament in Hobart, Australia a following week, immediately prior to the action begins at the main venue.

Her last appearance in the city was in the year 2021, and she has been a finalist in the women’s singles on two occasions, falling short against Serena in the finals of 2003 as well as 2017.
