The ice cream brand's Founding Partner Alleges Parent Company Blocked Pro-Palestinian Frozen Dessert Flavor
One of the original creators behind the well-known frozen dessert company Ben & Jerry's has stated how parent company Unilever stopped the launch for an innovative Palestine-themed frozen dessert product.
Ben Cohen, who established the business with Jerry Greenfield, announced how he plans to independently develop the controversial product within an individual collection highlighting issues the company has been prevented from addressing publicly.
Ongoing Conflict Involving Creators versus Corporate Owner
The recent development escalates the continuing disagreement between the world-famous dessert company with Unilever, the British consumer goods giant which has owned Ben & Jerry's since 2000.
Both founders maintain how Unilever along with their ice cream division the Magnum brand unlawfully blocked Ben & Jerry's from "honouring its social mission".
The Fruit Sorbet as a Symbol for Support
The entrepreneur revealed through social media that he is creating a new watermelon-based frozen dessert, asking for consumer ideas for the product's name plus potential ingredients.
“I'm accomplishing what they couldn't,” Mr. Cohen declared from his kitchen. “I'm creating a watermelon-based ice cream that calls for permanent peace for Palestinians and calls for addressing the harm that occurred in the region.”
This particular fruit has emerged as a symbol for support for the Palestinian people because of its colors, which match those of Palestine's national banner – red, green, black and white.
Previous Social Engagement plus Recent Developments
Several years ago, Ben & Jerry's ceased sales of its products in territories occupied by Israel, resulting in the parent company selling the Israeli operation to an Israeli distributor, thereby permitting continued sales in the occupied West Bank.
This upcoming dessert series is being developed under Mr. Cohen's personal brand, the socially conscious ice cream brand which originally established in 2016 to support ex- political contender Bernie Sanders with the product "Bernie's Back".
Management Changes plus Upcoming Intentions
The founder stated how he will create other ice cream flavors focusing on concerns which Ben & Jerry's was silenced from addressing publicly due to corporate restrictions.
The announcement follows partner Jerry Greenfield resigned his position at the company in September, after many years of involvement, citing concerns regarding how the company's autonomy was compromised following corporate moves to curb their advocacy work.
Previously, Ben Cohen commented how “My partner has strong compassion and this conflict with our parent company was breaking it."
"My heart compels me to continue to work inside the company to advocate for corporate autonomy so that it can fulfill its ethical purpose, the principles that established its foundation and has maintained for over 40 years," he told journalists.
