The Game UN:Me: An Psychological Horror Merging Silent Hill with Social Deduction Mechanics

The latest Day of the Devs digital showcase unveiled a number of fascinating upcoming titles, but one especially has seized the imagination: UN:Me. Developed by Historia and Shueisha Games, this single-player experience appears to fuse together the dread-filled setting of a Silent Hill game with the paranoid deduction core of Among Us.

"It's a distinctive experience where a young woman harboring multiple personalities within her must escape from a maze of the psyche," explains producer Yasukazu Kawai.

Entering a Fractured Mind

In UN:Me, players take control of an unnamed female protagonist seeming to be of teenage years. Inside her exist four distinct souls, each with unique anxieties and drives. These souls can take over spontaneously, unleashing their innermost phobias upon her without warning.

Based on revealed footage, much of the narrative unfolds within a eerie medical facility, though other scenes depict the main character exploring a desolate chapel.

A World of Individual Horror

"What makes you afraid of? What makes you uncomfortable?" asks creative lead Shun Sasaki. "High places. Confined spaces. People in power. Elements that seem trivial to others can trigger a deep instinct within us. This game explores that concept — anxieties that are specific to every individual."

The central mechanic involves managing the persona that surfaces at any given time. However, these souls will change involuntarily during gameplay. While exploring, every persona's fears become amplified and assault the protagonist one after another. As the persona shifts, so does the particular terror the player experiences.

Unsettling Visuals and a Deadly Decision

Initially, UN:Me displays striking aesthetic parallels with the Silent Hill series. The hospital is filled with nurses who all share the identical visage, with disturbingly broad grins. Figures in the waiting room have large blooms growing from their heads are. Flowers are an ever-present theme, contrasting natural beauty with supernatural dread.

Yet, UN:Me presents a unique twist. Players must determine which of the four souls haunting the heroine is the "real" one. "Each of the souls claims that the body is rightfully them," explains a developer. "During the game, you need to figure out who is authentic."

After a player believes a soul is an impostor, they must eliminate it. However, since each soul can deceive or obfuscate the reality, it is incredibly simple to make a mistake.

"Perhaps you've already eliminated the real [soul] by your own actions," a voice suggests. "The last one standing could be a fraud. In any case, your choices are final."

UN:Me currently lacks a publicly announced launch window, but it is can be follow on platforms.
