The most severe potential impacts of the climate crisis for the UK have been detailed by scientists, including a searing 4C rise in average temperatures to a 2-metre rise in ocean levels. A separate possibility envisions a plunge of 6C in temperatures following the shutdown of key Atlantic Ocean currents, which would massively disrupt agriculture and energy needs.

Plausible Events, Not Guarantees

These impacts, a number of which are linked to irreversible climate shifts, are viewed as unlikely but possible. The team said that these scenarios addressed a shortfall in forecasting that had rendered the UK ill-prepared for worst-case results.

"The severe weather events we have detailed aren’t predictions, but they are credible," stated Nigel Arnell who oversaw the study. "The nation has been making preparations lacking the tools to assess worst-case scenarios. A further series of dire projections details the possible scale of extreme weather between now and the close of the 2100s. These indicate that thermometer readings could rocket in certain periods by up to 6C above the norm, while precipitation could be 300% of standard measurements.

The probability of the extreme scenarios occurring cannot be precisely determined due to uncertainty about what steps will be implemented to address global heating and how the Earth's systems will respond. This analysis was compared to security threat evaluations or stress tests for the banking sector.

Major Scenario Highlights

  • 4C Temperature Rise: Worldwide averages exceeding 4C by 2100 could happen if climate action fails or if vicious cycles including the Amazon basin perishing release its enormous store of carbon. This would cause extreme and prolonged heat domes and dry spells hitting the UK in summer.
  • Ocean Circulation Failure: A major ocean current, the North Atlantic current, is slowing down and losing stability due to global heating. A complete failure commencing by 2030 would lead to a six-degree temperature drop in the UK. "Crop production would face immense difficulties and freshwater availability would be fundamentally reshaped," noted the lead researcher.
  • Sudden Ocean Inundation: A surge of 2.0-2.2 metres around the UK by 2100 could take place if glaciers in the polar regions melt abruptly, submerging seaside communities. In contrast to the other scenarios, this threat is already recognized by infrastructure experts.
  • Clean Air Warming: Temperatures could also be increased by about 0.75C if airborne particulates is sharply cut. This paradoxical outcome occurs because pollution particles from industrial activity reflect solar radiation from reaching the ground.

Planning for the Worst

These dire projections could be applied to guide the building of critical national infrastructure, such as housing developments, energy plants and urban drainage systems. Awareness of these environmental threats could also accelerate the transition to slash carbon pollution.

The analysis developed the extreme models using a blend of real-world events, digital projections and climate physics. These outcomes exclude potential global problems such as the global food shortages and geopolitical instability.

The research was requested as part of a government’s adaptation planning initiative. Previous assessments have warned that too little consideration was being paid to high-consequence, low-probability risks.

The government's climate advisors has stated that the UK must "become resilient to moderate heating" and examine the risks for 4C. Past policy documents have been criticised as being "insufficient" by certain experts.
