We are verifying video footage and photographs circulated earlier today that purport to show the scene of a alleged car bomb blast that Russian officials say fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia confirmed that Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he later died of his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the site of where the images were from was based on social media reports indicating the blast happened on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
We used street-view imagery on Google Maps and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a nearby apartment building seen in the footage.
Locating additional buildings, streetlights and the street layout verified the exact location the footage were taken.
We also checked that the videos were new and that the images had not been manipulated.
